A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER
May 4, 2020
We’d like to give you an update regarding what you can expect for our 2020 season.
Once this passes, we are hoping Gretna Theatre will be the fresh air and great stories that we all need. For now, we will be postponing our 2020 season shows until 2021. The Summer Club will remain on September 4, and our Rodgers and Hammerstein concert with Hershey Symphony will be postponed until the winter.
If by June 5, the Playhouse is deemed safe for August, health measures can be ensured for our audience and artists, and the state guidelines permit us, we will revisit bringing some Mainstage and Kids performances to you at the end of our season.
Our decision to postpone the regular season was made based on available health and government information impacting if we can operate. The amount of time a show needs before the performance to design, build, and rehearse, prohibits us from beginning the season as normal today to deliver the high-quality productions that you expect. And in a safe and clean facility.
Our focus, like most businesses, has adapted from producing to preserving, so that we can return to serving the community as soon as possible - bringing our educational touring productions back into your schools, sending our teaching artists into spaces that have little or no arts access, and providing job opportunities to young artists across Central PA. Theatre has survived the plague and outlasted the pandemic of 1918. Gretna Theatre rebuilt a collapsed roof from snow and storm, and there has never been a day that life in the theatre wasn’t challenging. So we’ll just have to hurdle this obstacle too, because hope is just as contagious as a virus, and Gretna Theatre is an amazing, emotional, and spiritually shared experience that cannot be matched by virtual presentation.
To all of our ticket holders – we know we’re not the first thing on your mind as your protect yourself and your families, so we will be reaching out to you in the next week or so via email with details on your options, for when you’re ready. Any gift certificates will be extended through next summer as well. I would like to thank you for being a part of Gretna Theatre’s family. Your support inspires us to look at this just like an intermission - We’re not going anywhere, and we’ll be back for a strong second act soon. Just as the American playwright Tony Kushner observed, “the world only spins forward”.
