Graduate Students In Scenic Design
Internees are sought for the 2017 summer season. Join us for the season, assist our New York professional designer(s) in the design, construction, painting, implementation of five shows. Build your portfolio!
LOCAL High School juniors and seniors are welcome to apply.
Interns are provided a weekly stipend amount depending upon their experience. All interns are paid.
All of the above are open to candidates currently in college or recent college graduates. Some High School junior/senior students are also welcome (16 years of age or over by May 2017). Heavy emphasis will be given to candidates who have local housing as out-of-town artist housing is quite limited. Insights as to what it takes to enter the world of professional theatre as well as a practical knowledge of the skills necessary in both the theatrical and everyday workplace will be experienced throughout the summer season. Professionals in each of the above disciplines are the immediate supervisors of each of the interns, providing professional guidance and skilled training in these disciplines – within an environment impossible for most schools to replicate. Interns may be involved in both Main Stage and Theatre for Young Audiences productions!
This will be an intensive immersion in professional theatre for two and a half months!
If you are interested in joining our Acting Intern Company, you must attend the local or New York auditions and let us know at the time of your interest in this program. Please see additional information on the Auditions page; you do not need to email your information to us if you are attending the auditions. If you absolutely cannot attend any of the above auditions, local candidates only may email your photo and resume for consideration. (Note that it is rare for us to cast anyone without an in-person audition. Please note your interest in our internship program.)
Gretna Theatre Design, Stage Management and Technical Theatre Interns are fully immersed in the production of professional summer theatre. We will produce five fully-staged Main Stage shows and five one-act Theatre for Young Audiences productions in June, July and August, with pre-show design and building beginning late-May/early June. Technical Interns are involved in the design and execution of the technical aspects of the shows – props design/procurement/set decoration and crew, scenic design, construction and painting, lighting design and crew, sound design and crew, costumes design and prep, running crew. Some theatre experience is preferred.
Gretna Theatre House Management and Box Office Interns will participate in all areas of audience services and assist with volunteer management. Only local candidates will be considered due to our lack of available housing. Box Office Interns must be comfortable with computer systems for ticketing (training provided) and have an affinity for interacting with our patrons. A good telephone manner, ability to speak well, and neat appearance are all critical to our success as this position becomes the first impression of Gretna Theatre for our customers. House Management Interns prep the house for the audience for five performances per week, interact with stage management and box office staff regarding the timing of opening the house, oversee volunteer ushers, program stuffing, tearing tickets, customer service in person. Again, an affinity for working with the general public is critical. These internships are an opportunity to learn more of the business of theatre where it counts – in customer service. Theatre experience per se is not required, some retail experience (cash and credit card sales) would be useful.
Most technical positions begin late-May/early June, depending on school schedule and release. Mentoring by professional staff. Learn by doing! If credit is available from your school, we are happy to provide further information to your advisers.
Those with access to local housing and transportation are given preference, only due to the number of rooms available to us for out-of-town artists.
To apply for Technical, Design, Stage Management, House Management and Box Office Internships, Email resume, references and cover letter indicating your area of interest as soon as possible.
